North London is rich in historical figures and events. Yet it remains an area which is hidden to London tourists. The most interesting places can be right under the noses of London residents, yet they are hardly noticed, or their secrets have perhaps been forgotten.
Former rock legend, actor, Islington councillor and today an established local historian (he is the chairman of the Islington History and Archaeology Society) with an international reputation, Peter Powell, who has lived in the Islington Canonbury area for more than 30 years, is helping tourists and residents alike to discover north London's hidden treasures. Peter reckons that in particular Islington (which borders the City of London and the East End, and is only 12 minutes from Victoria, on the Victoria Line.), is the most historically interesting Borough of London and he would stand up and argue this in any public debate.
Peter's walks have a great reputation, and he gets clients from all over the globe, including some very famous people such as Sir John Betjemen (the late Poet Laureate), Kevin Spacey and Robin Williams (there are more famous names than we have web-space to mention!). Furthermore, all of Peter's walks have a personal touch, including lots of background on his own career as actor and singer, as well as personal friends in the Islington area including members of parliament, local councillors and friends in business and the arts. One of Peter's closest friends, whom he misses greatly, was Sam Wanamaker, the originator of the idea to re-create the Globe Theatre on the South Bank in which Peter was personally involved.
"Angel Walks" was established by Peter Powell in 1985. Peter spent the greatest part of his life on the road as an actor and singer. He toured in rep and variety; he toured the world with his "rock n' roll" band, as "Rory Storm and the Hurricanes" and Ringo Starr was his drummer before he was with the Beatles. In those days, Peter regularly performed in Hamburg's "Star Club".
Peter Powell lives in Islington, with his wife Judith and has two daughters, Imogen and Cordelia (Shakespeare anybody?).
